Our wonderful home swap in the Lake District

"We spent a great week at Becki and Lee's home in Cumbria in August. Their home was lovely and cosy and everything was presented beautifully with lovely welcome gifts too. The house is in a beautiful rural spot with incredible views just up the road and is in an ideal place to explore the northern lakes.

As always we felt that home swapping with a similar family really works well for us and we had loads of tips of places to visit.

We enjoyed Keswick, kayaking on Ullswater and a bit of cycling too (we managed to avoid too many hills!) The Gruffalo trail at Whinlatter was a hit too.

Putting a home swap membership ‘on hold’ or arranging a non-simultaneous exchange

Q: Since I joined Home Base Holidays a few months ago my husband has been very ill so we haven’t been in a position to arrange a home swap yet. We’ve spent several weeks away in the French mountains while my husband recovered. In hindsight, could we have had people stay in our London flat while we were away?

A: If a member is unable to arrange an exchange for a period (illness in the family, moving homes, etc) we are happy to put their membership 'on hold' until they are ready again to consider home swap offers. Also, as you suggested, you can use the service to arrange non-simultaneous swaps, i.e. you make your home available to exchange guests at a time when you will be away, and arrange your return stay in their home (or, often a second home) at a time that's convenient for both parties.

‘About Us’ in home swap listings

You don’t need to go into great detail in the 'About Us' section of your home swap offer (members will first of all be checking the descriptions of homes and areas to find the most suitable offers for their needs); however, it always helps to know a little about the members you are contacting to suggest a home exchange as this will give an idea of your likely compatibility. ‘About Us’ is your chance to provide a little information about yourself, your family and your interests. The following ‘About Us’ (under the photo of the couple’s beautiful Tudor, Grade II listed long house in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England) is a very good example:

"We are a retired teaching couple. Occasionally we may holiday together with two in-laws - making four in the group. We would love to exchange to anywhere, city or country, or especially sea coast, for 1 or 2 week(s) or a w/e. We are always open to offers for longer or shorter times."
