Q: We are a couple and have recently arranged to swap our three bedroom house in London with a family of four who have a five bedroom house in rural Scotland. As we are making our three bedrooms available to the family, is it ok for us to invite friends or family to stay in their home while we’re there? – Mary J.
A: As the family you are swapping homes with will have assumed that it is only two of you who will be staying in their home (and will prepare one bedroom for you), it is very important to ask their permission well ahead of your swap dates before inviting family members or friends to join you. They should be happy for you to invite guests who can be accommodated comfortably to stay in their home as long as they know who will be staying. It is not only a courtesy to ask early on in your discussions but will also give your exchange partners enough time to ensure any extra bedrooms needed are prepared and ready for your arrival.
