Q: We have had a home swap enquiry for summer next year. We are considering selling our property, but not sure when, so can we still go ahead with this swap? Should we tell the other party our plans for selling and ask if they are still interested? – Barry
A: If the sale of your home is not definite and so the potential swap could go ahead next summer, do let the members know that you are interested; however, it’s very important to be up front and let them know right away that, although you are very interested in their offer, there is a chance that you will be looking to sell your home in the near future. Hopefully you’ll be able to keep in contact so that you can firm up details once you have a clearer idea of whether or not you will be putting your home on the market. Make sure to be clear that the swap is not guaranteed at this stage to avoid the other member purchasing flight tickets or making any other definite plans until you can definitely commit to the dates. If really interested in swapping with you, members will generally be happy to wait for a reasonable amount of time but will want to have a final answer as soon as possible to allow time to arrange another swap if you are unable to make a firm commitment.
