Q: I live on the outskirts of a very beautiful city and whilst the location is desirable, my tiny one-bedroomed apartment is rather modest. In your experience would this be a problem?
A: Home Base Holidays members generally first look at location, then, for homes big enough to sleep the number of people in their exchange party comfortably. Your apartment would certainly be suitable for a couple or single visitor (some will also have small, modest apartments or flats while others may have larger or more luxurious houses but won't necessarily need the same in an exchange home).
Independently and almost simultaneously, we at Home Base Holidays received great reports
from both parties to a home exchange last summer - Theron Craig from Florida,
left the following comment on the blog soon after Anne Shearer had sent her entry for our 'Win a Kindle' competition, a story about her first ever home swap - with the Craigs in Florida!
"We had a wonderful home exchange with Anne and
Danny Shearer of Roberton by Biggar, Scotland, during the month of July, 2013.
The whole experience was full of pleasant surprises including great neighbors
next door and down the road in both directions. We walked up on the moors and
took in the fabulous views to be found there.
We visited with folks in Glasgow, including the mother
and grandmother of our exchange host, Anne. The visits to Glasgow and Edinburgh
were fun and we really enjoyed spending time in Biggar where we indulged in cappuccinos,
Wi-Fi, the bakery, and grocery shopping.
We also attended the Biggar Agricultural Show and this
was a special treat for us - it reminded us of country fairs in Canada and the
We had special neighbors all around us in Roberton and
they made sure we felt at home in their wee village. We also must mention that
Anne's mother and father were just wonderful and we will always remember their
kindness and their family." - Theron Craig, Englewood, FL, USA
Theron's comfortable home is located in a quiet
residential area very close to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf Beaches
of SW Florida. See this lovely home exchange offer and photos (pool in photo below).
And from Anne:
"We completed our first ever home exchange to the
Sunshine State of Florida this summer. What an amazing experience! As new
exchangers we were understandably slightly apprehensive, but we could not have
enjoyed our holiday more.
After a long
journey (involving planes, trains and automobiles!) we arrived in Englewood,
Florida. The house was so welcoming and we loved having our own private pool.
We exchanged cars as well, which was great and we explored as much of Florida
as we could during our four week stay there. We found some fantastic places
including the most beautiful sunset at Venice Isles, whilst watching wild
dolphins. Some memories will stay with us forever.
liked the fact that you have so much freedom and so many home comforts
available during home exchange. We have another exchange organised to
Switzerland for Xmas and New Year and we are very excited about this - and the
world of opportunity which home swapping opens up." - Anne Shearer,

beautiful 200 year old country cottage, in an idyllic Scottish village. See her
