‘Were you born in a barn?’ This is a phrase I heard often as a child growing up on a farm in Canada (when I left a house door open). Well, browsing through recent home swap offers on Home Base Holidays, from the number of converted barns for exchange, there could be many people who actually were born in barns!
If you live in a ‘conventional’ house or apartment, it’s fun to look for a completely different type of home for a home exchange (and living in your home will be a different experience for your exchange guests).
A few samples of converted barns offered for exchange:
Gallery Barn in Varen, Midi-Pyrenees, France The photo shows the wonderful gallery barn that is offered for exchange separately, or along with, an elegant 1865 "Squires" House with south facing courtyard, large heated pool, five acre gardens and orchard in a tranquil, gorgeous area of SW France. A pigeonnier, sleeping two, is also available. I doubt that many people can claim to have slept in a pigeonnier (a pigeon house or dovecote)!
The Old Dairy Barn in Bath, England Tucked away behind the owner’s house in a very private location on the edge of a walled village, The Old Dairy Barn dates from the early 17th century and exudes character and style. Its location is ideal for easy access to the Georgian city of Bath, less than 3 miles away, a World Heritage site with many attractions such as the famous Roman Baths, the new Thermae Bath Spa, Bath Abbey. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs close by, with towpath walks and narrow boats for hire.
Llanmadoc, Gower Peninsula, Wales Kite Hill Barn is a stone built 300 year old converted set of traditional farm buildings. An oil fired Aga in the flag-stoned kitchen, two wood burning stoves, squashy sofas all combine to make this an ideal, secluded, rural retreat. There are walks from the front door and it is only a short distance from some of Gower's best beaches.
Williamstown, Massachusetts, USA This lovely home is a large (sleeps 8), newly renovated barn conversion. Williamstown is a beautiful New England college town in the Berkshires. The house is right in town, but in a secluded, bucolic location on an acre of land; walking distance to hiking trails and tennis courts, with golf course, horseback riding, great organic farmers markets, farm stands, etc. nearby.
Woodbridge, Suffolk, England The house is 200 years old. It is a converted traditional Suffolk barn set in big gardens with children's swing and table tennis in the garage. The house is in a pretty village which has a thriving pub, church and village hall. It is close to the delightful riverside market town of Woodbridge which has shops, cinema, railway station, pubs and restaurants.
