During the years that Paul and I have been members of the Home Base Holidays family there have been a few occasions when we have taken the opportunity to use a home swap to see friends. Home exchange can provide a great opportunity to spend some time with loved ones without having to "live in each other's pockets".
We have just returned from a home exchange where I was equidistant from two of my oldest, dearest friends... an hour's drive for each of them. That meant I could just stay put. We had a lovely day together, talking, laughing, eating, walking.
We were in the spa town Harrogate. And what a place that is for walking. Just around the corner from Marguerite's delightful house is the Stray, an area of well-tended common land, at this time of year resplendent with huge drifts of daffodils (Paul in photo). A stroll across the Stray takes you to the town centre, a place you'd be hard put to beat for civic pride. As well as amazing parks and gardens every piece of public space is brimming with gorgeous displays of flowers. The architecture is splendid...lots of beautiful buildings of historical interest and plenty of display boards to keep you informed. It's great to turn a corner and come across a little stone hut which was once a spa ticket office, for example.
The shopping centre is well laid out with a huge variety of outlets, well know and independent, and a variety of good bars and restaurants. Harrogate, of course, is home to the famous Betty's Tea Rooms.
But what really impresses is the friendliness of local people. Oh... and a fantastic fish and chip shop in the parade of shops near Marguerite's house. Proud Southerner that I am you can't beat a Yorkshire chippie! - Sandra
